The Saale-Unstrut-region is the world's nothernmost wine-growing area. Situated in the lee of Germany's low mountain range in the south of Sachsen-Anhalt, its character has been shaped by the continental climate. This is why the region is also called the "Tuscany of the north".

The region is embedded into romantic valleys, surrounded by old castles, churches, stately homes and villas. From May until September, the landloards of castles invite their guests to wine festivals and medieval plays. Be it at the "Mittelaltertage" (medieval festival) at the Eckertsburg, at the "Weinfest" (wine festival) in Bad Sulza or Bad Kösen or at the "Eierbetteln" (egg begging) in Leisling-the visitor will always be in a position to get a lasting impression of the region and the uniqueness of its people.

Among wine connoisseurs, the region has for a long time been an insider tip. For years, wine-growers have been dedicated and passionate producers of high quality dry wines, which captivate by their quality- and rarity. A visit to the "Rotkäpchen"-champagne producers in Freyburg is absolutely recommendable. There, in the "Domkeller" the Cuvée barrel of 1896 can be found.

For the most part, the historical buildings of the Saale-Unstrut region have been built during the 10th and 11th century. The Rudelsburg, Burg Saleck and Neuenburg castle allow a small insight into the life of this time. Hiking and biking trails, well equipped with signpost, allow tourists to participate in the beauty and the rich historical past of the wine-region Saale-Unstrut.

The wordsof the arthistoric Franz Kugler become comprehensible, who in 1826 wrote those lines which soon became a folk song:"At the fair banks of the Saale, proud and bold castles are standing. Their roofs fallen into ruin and the wind blowing through the halls, clouds moving above..."
